Lady Gaga Hits Japan For Charity

Written by Michaela Carroll

World-wide superstar Lady Gaga has recently spoken out for Japan.

The performer has been raising funds to help the victims of the March 11th disasters, but is also encouraging her fans to start visiting Japan again. Since the disasters, tourism in the country has dropped by almost 30% and the country’s economy is taking the hit.

Gaga told press at a news conference in Tokyo, “I would like to use my position here today and all week long to run around Tokyo and enjoy the beautiful city, and kiss all the beautiful little monsters and scream at the top of my lungs that everyone should visit this beautiful place.”

Aside from encouraging tourism, Gaga has contributed a song to a new charity album, helped design a fund-raising t-shirt and is auctioning off some of her belongings. This weekend, she performed at MTV’s VIDEO MUSIC AID JAPAN, the tenth annual Japanese Video Music Awards. The event is in aid of the Japanese Red Cross. The awards are a culmination of the Music of Hope Campaign, MTV’s channel-wide campaign in response to the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

Other performers included Tokio Hotel, One Night Only and Monkey Majik and the event is hosted by massive Japanese star AKB48.

Gaga also contributed $1.5 million to the relief efforts from the sales of her charity wristbands. The bracelets, a simple white rubber band reading ‘Pray for Japan’, cost only 3. By March 16th, pre-ordering sales had raised $250 thousand. Considering the bracelets weren’t put on sale until the 25th, this is impressive.

Gaga is just one of the many celebrities helping to rebuild Japan.
