Doesn't everything look as perfect as rainbows and cherries...well almost. Not pictured are all of the times I told my kids I was going to pull off the road to paddle their little hineys if they didn't quit the teasing, the whining, the kicking, the pinching and oh yes lets not forget the biting incident. Now I wouldn't want to go discounting any of the 4 different rainbows I saw in one day but we already know that life ain't no bowl of cherries, right? Ok great, because with that being said our life of summer around Grandma and Papa's small town overall hasn't been too shabby. Well if you don't count the fact that I can't find a House Beautiful, Elle Decor, Veranda or Architectural Digest. Seriously I scoured the town up and down Main Street and beyond only to find the likings of publications only put out by Better Homes and Gardens and maybe a Country Living if one was lucky. Finally at my last stop which happened to be the Big K I decided to use the money I would have spent on two magazines to buy a dress...and I feel good about it. I also feel good about slowing down and not really having any set plans. That is why if you notice we were some of the best dressed with flip flops on a hiking trail at Capitol Reef. I didn't know what I had gotten myself into but when we got to Capital Reef we just let the adventure unfold. It rained on and off but we had to see the Indian writings (that is what my girls call the petroglyphs). Before we had left I had purchased the girls their own disposable camera so that they could really get into seeing the beauty of our adventure..and it seemed to work. I love that we all were able to get out on foot and safely hike the two miles that it took to see things that were not right off the side of the road. I love even more that Maren thought the modern day writings into the rock were ancient petroglyphs..she was so excited that she busted out the camera to document. It was hard for me to break it to her that Eric + Monique were not ancient history..well probably they really were but you know what I mean. Anyway we are alive..even without much internet usage..I know hard to believe.

Hollywood golden child Kwesi Boakye recently agreed to be amongst over 50 celebrity designers asked to custom make a “Verymeri” t-shirt for the NextAid Foundation.

Kwesi was elated when his creative design was chosen by Nordstrom department stores nationwide and he donated 100% of his royalties from the sale of the tees to “NextAid” non-profit of Los Angeles.
Kwesi decided to team up with another young actor Yara Shahidi to create a visual ad campaign to bring awareness to the NextAid Foundation and to encourage other young people about the message of the t-shirt “Born a Star Always a Star” – which in the words of Kwesi tinsel town’s cutie means “You’re born the way you are for a reason, so believe in yourself”. Yara’s words “Everyone is important, beautiful and amazing from the moment they take their first breath” are what makes buying Kwesi’s “Born a Star Always a Star” tees at Nordstrom not just a good thing to do but the right thing to do.

“NextAid” is a highly respected non-profit organization in Los Angeles and creates projects that serve needy children, youth, and women in Africa. As the great grandson of a Ghana West African King, Kwesi was thrilled to find out that the money raised thus far from the sale of the t-shirts has been used to support the construction of an ecological business facility located in Nairobi slum, the Kawangware Vision Centre. Beckhams Donate Baby Gifts To Charity

Due to an overwhelming number of presents for their new baby, David and Victoria Beckham are donating many of them to charity.
The couple gave birth to baby number four – who they named Harper Seven – earlier this month, and were inundated with gifts for the infant. Britain’s Daily Mail is reporting they plan to donate a large number of the items to charity shops around Beverly Hills.
“David and Victoria have a policy that they don’t accept gifts and endeavour to return anything that is sent to them,” a source told the paper. "If anyone contacts the office in Los Angeles, they’re told that ? but often they send things anyway or they send presents without a return address.
“Since Victoria’s pregnancy was announced in January, they have been inundated. They were sent something like a dozen pushchairs.
“Working out who had sent it and sending it back would have been a full-time job, so it’s easier to give it away. Some items have been returned and some have been boxed up and given to charity.
“There are going to be some very lucky families in Los Angeles over the next few weeks who have no idea they are using pushchairs intended for the Beckhams.”
A spokeswomen for the couple confirmed their charity donations: “We do receive a lot of unsolicited goods which are sent to deserving charities.”

Let's all pile in the car and go to the drive-in theater
? Day 157 of Vintage 365 ?
Though in recent years they have become, in far too many cities and towns, mere memories, their physical presence often demolished entirely, once - not so very long ago - drive-in movie theaters were a common site across much of the North American landscape.
In fact, during my 1980s/90s childhood, there was a drive-in located less than an hour away from our house, which, when the weather turned warm enough my family would make a point of going to visit at least a couple of times most summers.
There was something almost otherworldly cool about the experience, as viewed through the eyes of a young child (who was already obsessed with all things vintage), of piling into the minivan with blankets, pillows, snacks, stuffed animals, juice boxes, bug spray, and other sundry household items nestled amongst the the seats, myself and my siblings.
I remember feeling a wave of excitement flutter through my stomach as we needed the entrance, the sky slipping rapidly from late summer to glistening dusk, knowing that in a matter of minutes we'd be able to pass through the gate, pull up to a parking slot, hook up the sound to our van, and settle in for what was usually a double bill of very family friendly films.
First of course, there would be the customary "get out and stretch your legs" run around the long, crisp grass, other children merrily doing the same thing as their parents cracked open cooler chest chilled beverages and sun roofs, if they had them.
As dusk tumbled into the fountain pen ink hued sky of night and the pre-movie ads encouraging movie-goers to head on over to the concession stand began to roll, we'd come running back to settle into the car, hurriedly arranging pillows, opening snacks (often red licorice and popcorn or potato chips), and getting ready for the main attraction to begin flashing across that seemingly giant canvass.
This act of going to the drive-in movie theater was, by all accounts a simple one, and yet I cherish the memories of the hot summer nights spent in the flickering glow of the movies I saw there so very much. I'm grateful to my parents for taking my brother, sister and I to the the drive-in, keeping alive a tradition they'd done with their own respective parents as youngsters.
Though drive-in theaters are becoming rarer with each passing year, during their golden heyday (the 1940s - 1970s, with a particular spike in popularity during the 50s), they were a fantastic part of the cultural and literal landscape.

The first drive-in theater ever opened up on June 6, 1933, exactly 78 years ago today. In the time since then this entertaining form of outdoor movie viewing has risen and fallen, but - at least as of this moment - has not completely gone the way of the dinosaur yet.
I hope very much that it never will, for I would greatly enjoy carrying on one day with my own future children the tradition of loading up the car and heading down to the drive-in theater for a night of smiles, yummy treats, and delightfully family movies.

Are you ready for Simon Cowell's 'The X Factor?'
Simon Cowell is back with "The X-Factor," a singing show based on the British "The X-Factor."
Cowell will be joined by Paula Abdul L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger as they search for the next big solo or group act. To sweeten the pot, the winner of the show wins a $5 million recording deal.
A special premiere will be shown Tuesday during the All-Star baseball game. The actual season begins Sept. 21.

Did you know that you could buy a home for $280,000 in Maui? Well that is at least what our server at Momma's Fish House told us because he had just purchased a home up on the countryside. He, his wife and baby had come to the island from California with high hopes of some great surfing. He loved it so much that he joined the other 35% of Californians who make up Maui's population. I think $280,000 for a 1800 square foot home on Maui doesn't sound too shabby....but could I really live on an island? Speaking of surfing I just found out what a hang ten really means...how in the world? Also while in the ocean I was plummeted by a powerful wave and thought about a) the power of a tsunami and b) how I would stick to wake-boarding and not attempt to surf. Really surfing is hard and takes some serious skills...like those "no fear" kind of skills.
Anyway Maui was our destination as a last minute trip and boy it really worked well with our life. I'm not too sure it worked well with the life of Grandma and Aunt Linda though...angels I like to call them as they took care of the home front while we were away. It was the longest we had been away from the kids but a much needed break. While we were away we kept mainland communication to a minimum..which meant no internet (note to self: do that more often). In my opinion, Maui offers such a diverse experience so it really is a great destination for all . The first part of the trip we stayed in a budget hotel and then the second part of the trip we splurged on a nice oceanfront resort. We came to the conclusion that on Maui a nice resort was not our style. We like to get out, move our bodies, find secret nude beaches (because we did) and explore...so a nice place with all the amenities doesn't suite our fancy. In fact a nice comfortable bed with the sound of the waves crashing outside our window was all we needed. I could go on and on but am thinking I will stop..however if you are planning a trip over there and need some good suggestions on places to see, places to eat and places to stay then email me. I feel like we experienced enough over there that I could offer some great suggestions...many of them budgets friendly ideas. Aloha, Mahalo and Go, Fight Win.
P.S. - I think I just may follow a ton of blogs because my google reader was over 2000 unread posts when I got back. Still trying to figure out how I am going to handle all of my internet dealios. I sure can't wait to see what kind a fun and creative stuff you all have been up to.
