American Idol - Does It Pay to Be the Producers' Favorite?

Lauren "DJ Tanner" Alaina - "Turn on the Radio" by Reba McEntire

The answer: Not anymore, not really.

During the early seasons of Idol either the voting audience was more easily swayed by the machinations of The Powers That Be or The Powers That Be were better at predicting which contestants the public would fawn all over.  Or a combination of the two.

But after the Rise of Bo Bice during the Carrie Underwood season, when a laissez faire rocker who had received nary a mention during the early rounds of the audition process came close to unseeding the Crown Princess of Idol Town, the profile of what makes an American Idol was changed.

Also, during Season 5, the American Idol website launched its blogging community, so people who were pro-Taylor Hicks or pro-Elliott Yamin knew they were not alone and felt free to vote for the underdogs instead of the producers' pick for the first ever rocker American Idol.  America wasn't yet ready for a rocking Idol, and they wouldn't be ready until Season 7, until America's Rocker would take down the Producer's Answer to the Disney Teen Machine.

Here's how the producers' early faves fared in each of their respective seasons:

All of this adds up to proof that early producer's favorite Lauren "Deej" Alaina will not win this year's Idol competition.  Who will best her?  A musical bearded Muppet?  The teenage country singin' version of George W. Bush?  A robot teenager with no soul?  Only time will tell.
